Something is terribly wrong here, now you cannot just even pin point,
where. What we have turned ourselves into? Question is as to why; we are slowly and
gradually turning ourselves into monsters? The lists of incidents showcasing
our horrific deeds are endless, at the same time increasing. Throughout the
length and breadth of the country we have been seeing rise in incidents of
crime against humanity in general and women in particular. We need to ponder upon that where we are at fault?
Starting from the family the basic unit of our society, either
its teaching has lost relevance or what we are doing/teaching is altogether
wrong. What kind of values we imbibe in our Children today while they grow up?
Don’t you think our parents have issued a gag order for the females with too
many don’t? On the other hand, what is being taught to the males? Nothing. Will
it remain like that? Why not to give the right kind of teaching to the future
of this nation. At the same time going by statistics
of people involved in such crimes, many people involved are either belongs to
the family of the victim or the trusted one. So we also need to think how to
deal with such kind of rotten breed that has emerged in the backyard.
After the family, comes the
surrounding or the vicinity where one lives in, which plays a vital role in
shaping the young minds. There also we have failed terribly. Teenagers learn
numerous kinds of slang as established norms of the society. So, till the time
they grow up they have developed a habit of not respecting the opposite gender.
Either society seems to be indifferent to these developments or promoting it
knowingly or unknowingly.
Then comes the peer group,
where our young minds are matures. Here machismo has become synonymous to teasing
a girl and not saving one from being teased; no one protects and promotes the
latter (Generally). The two back to back incident happened in Mumbai is stark proof
of it.
Now we come to the police
system which is entrusted to oversee these incidents do not happen. But they
have terribly failed in that. Are they sole responsible for it? No, our
policing system is working on the laws formulated in 1860’s which were devised
and designed to continue the colonial rule. With few cosmetic surgeries
performed in these six decades it still continues in letter and spirit. Many
commission and review commission had been formulated in the past to look into
the matter. Even few, on the initiative of Supreme Court but at the end of the
day nothing has seen light of the day in totality. There are many problems
being faced by the police system. Like, the police population ratio is highly
skewed. Their working hour is not defined. So they are always under heavy work
pressure coupled with the pressure exerted by politician and bureaucracy. When
one goes to register his complaint they make him feel like a culprit in the first
place. This list of woes with the police system continues and needs to be
answered.
Then we come to the community of leaders who are expected to be the
best from the lot; but are they? The history of modern India is filled with
many instances of utter faith shown by the masses on their leaders while on the
other hand leaders showed zeal of supreme sacrifice for the betterment of the
masses. But what sort of examples do our
leaders put forward today? Few of our legislators are themselves named or
convicted for such heinous crimes cutting across party line. And they expect us
to believe that they will help in curbing this social menace.
In short the need of the hour is through introspection of the
society and system as a whole, last but not the least we need to do self
assessment to oversee, that we did not end up
becoming an animal like them, because self control is the best control. At the
same time mere formulating a new law
will not help, if the intent to implement it remains missing like now.
